THE PLEASURES AND SORROWS OF WORK
Alain De Botton

We spend most of our waking lives at work — but surprisingly little gets written about what makes work both one of the most exciting and most painful of all our activities.

The Pleasures and Sorrows of Workis an exploration of the joys and perils of the modern workplace, beautifully evoking what other people get up to all day – and all night – to make the frenzied contemporary world function. With a philosophical eye and his characteristic combination of wit and wisdom, Alain de Botton leads us on a journey around a deliberately eclectic range of occupations, from rocket science to biscuit manufacturing, accountancy to art – in the name of exploring what makes our jobs either fulfilling or soul-destroying

COV_Emmett_Final.indd THE BOOK OF EMMETT
Deborah Foster
normally $23.95, our price $16.77

A stunning first novel from a Melbourne author. The story of the Brown family will wrench at your heart and make you hug those you love ever tighter.

Emmett Brown is as dark as Heathcliff, and as unpredictable. Sometimes he’s an inspiration, but not often. He’s a man of booze and obsessions: one of them is his ‘System’, an attempt to bend the laws of probability. But when the lottery numbers and horses fail him, so do love and reason, and he becomes an ogre to his wife and children. Over the years, the consequences of Emmett’s rages shape both their spirits and psyches, but as he lies dying they discover that love – however imperfect – is the best defence against pain.

March Top 10

24 March, 2009

The dust is finally settling from Unibooks’ busiest month of the year. Addmitedly we’ve neglected our little blog for a little bit there, but we’re now back as we present our March top 10 for 2009.

robertson-statute-of-liberty THE STATUTE OF LIBERTY : How to Give Australians Back Their Rights
Geoffrey Robertson
normally $19.95 our price $13.97

Geoffrey Robertson QC puts the case for an Australian Bill of Rights cogently and dramatically, proving with evidence from other countries how a statute of liberty helps ordinary citizens and improves standards of governance and public services. He exposes the lies and urban myths the Australian people face from opponents of the bill, and shows how the charter he has drafted reflects the history and real contemporary values of Australians.

This is a provocative argument for change, which explains that real democracy only exists if politicians give the courts power to defend citizens against abuses of their human rights by governments and public servants.

And soon Mr Ali, from beautiful Vizag, sees his new business flourish as the indomitable Mrs Ali and assistant Aruna look on with careful eyes. But although many clients go away happy, problems lurk behind the scenes as Aruna nurses a heart-rending secret while Mr Ali cannot see that he rarely follows his own sage advice dished out so freely to others. And when love comes calling for Aruna, an impossible dilemma looms… A colourful coastal town proves the perfect backdrop for a splendid array of characters in this witty yet acutely observed debut novel. Indeed The Marriage Bureau for Rich People is just what Jane Austen might have written if she had ever been lucky enough to set foot in a contemporary Indian marriage bureau.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is without doubt an exciting addition to the canon of Harry Potter. They also reveal the wonderful versatility of the author, as she tackles with relish the structure and varying tones of a classic fairy tale. There are five tales included in the book: ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’, which is recounted in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; plus four more – ‘The Fountain of Fair Fortune’, ‘The Warlock’s Hairy Heart’, ‘The Wizard and the Hopping Pot’, and ‘Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump’. Cooee by Vivienne Kelly

COOEE

Vivienne Kelly

Cooee’s acerbic narrator, Isabel Weaving, is not quite what she seems. True, she’s a daughter, a sister, a mother and an ex-wife, having escaped one unsatisfactory marriage, although not with her relationships with her children intact. Her second husband, Max, is the love of her life but is no longer on the scene, the grief caused by his absence only tempered by the visits of her beloved granddaughter. Gradually and unwittingly, Isabel reveals more and more about herself, her relationships and Max’s disappearance.

Philosophy shaken, not stirred.

27 November, 2008

For many, slogging through the thick “high brow” philosophical texts from Kant to Descartes, Derrida to Sartre, can be very hard to digest. Those intimidating big questions about ethical dilemmas, existentialism, and the nature of self, are tedious and old. Philosophy’s public relations department sure has some issues! Talk about an existential crisis!

For me, the image of an old pipe-smoking philosophy professor with a giant beard sitting in his leather chair comes to mind. And the last thing I want to do is have an in-depth argument with him about the tired “to be or not to be?” question. I’d much rather ask questions like “what’s with that freaky island in that show Lost?” and “why does my boss share so many traits with David Brent from The Office?”

The Blackwell Philosophy and PopCulture series understands my concerns.

Reading these books doesn’t make you any less of a philosopher I think. Thinking deeply about pop culture and all things TV, movies and music with a serving of philosophy is fun and thought-provoking. I don’t think Immanuel Kant would be turning in his grave at the thought of this series. On the contrary, he would be listening to Metallica lyrics and watching episodes of South Park and determining how the ‘categorical imperative’ is explored in both texts.

The books in this series explore some of the finest examples of popular television, movies, and music through all the hallmarks of philosophical thought including democracy, feminism, existentialism, morality, religion, emotions, and identity – just to name a few. An intersection of popular culture and philosophy to make you laugh, think and debate!

The books from the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series retail at $27.95 and are available at Unibooks today!

Movember – A celebration of Mo Willems

10 November, 2008

Each November is a celebration of Moustaches. We largely have Movember to thank for this phenomenon – a celebration of facial hair of the upper-lip in the name of charity.

However, at Unibooks we’re celebrating Movember of a different variety – our author of the month – Mo Willems.

Mo Willems has written Emmy Award-winning scripts for Sesame Street and is also a stand-up comedian. But first and foremost he is a children’s author extraordinaire, and dare we say genius! Mo brings to life an eccentric team of characters; from the demanding egomaniac Pigeon, as well as Edwina (the dinosaur who didn’t know she was extinct – oh dear), to the endearing Elephant and Piggie and their steadfast friendship.

As books for pre-schoolers, most children (and many adults) will recognise themselves in Mo’s Pigeon series. The books assist with developing preschoolers’ reading skills whilst having mountains of fun! But maybe it’s the child-within that has impressed us at Unibooks – that, and also these books are a nice break from contract law and accounting textbooks which share our shopspace with Mo and his friends. At the University of Adelaide bookshop you’ll find staff members debating about which Pigeon book is the best. It’s probably a toss-up between “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!” and “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!

We’re also gushing over the Elephant and Piggie’s endearing and enduring friendship. Children’s classics to be sure!

Everyone has a bit of Pigeon, Elephant & Piggie in them. Mo Willems is an author for young and old. His wit is remarkable and he certainly has the Unibooks crew rolling down the bookshop aisles with laughter.
